The Disability Pension is a monthly, tax-free financial benefit provided to eligible Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans who have service-related disabilities or injuries that significantly impair their ability to work or function in daily life.

Who is Eligible for the Veteran Disability Credit?

In order to quality for the Veteran Disability Credit, you must be one of the following:

  • a Canadian Armed Forces member or Veteran
  • a current or former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
  • a Second World War or Korean War Veteran (includes Merchant Navy)
  • a civilian who served in the Second World War

If you are one of the above and diagnosed with a medical condition or disability caused in relation to your service, you could qualify for a Veteran Disability Credit.

How Much Can I Get for the Veteran Disability Credit?

If you qualify for the pain and suffering compensation, you can receive the following amounts depending on the extent of your disability:

You can choose to receive the payments monthly or as a lump sum.

If you don’t qualify for the pain and suffering compensation, you may still qualify for the disability pension.

The disability pension is a lifetime monthly benefit which increases if you have a spouse, common-law partner and/or children.

How to Apply for the Veteran Disability Pension

You can apply for disability benefits online through your VAC account, in person or through mail by downloading and filling out an application form.

You can mail it to the address on the form, or drop it off at your nearest Service Canada office, VAC office or CAF Transition Centre.

What determines the amount of my disability payments?

The amount of your disability payments is largely determined by the extent of your disability.

What happens to the monthly pain and suffering compensation payments if the recipient passes away?

If the recipient of this payment dies before receiving the equivalent lump sum amount, the survivor and dependent children would receive the remaining balance as a lump sum.
